Panic! at the Disks: First Rest-frame Optical Observations of Galaxy Structure at z > 3 with JWST in the SMACS 0723 Field

Abstract We present early results regarding the morphological and structural properties of galaxies seen with James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) at z > 3 in Early Release Observations toward SMACS 0723 cluster field. Using JWST we investigate, for first time, optical morphologies a significant number accurate photometric redshifts this field to determine form galaxy structure relatively universe. use visual M orfometryka measures perform quantitative morphology measurements, both parametric light profile fitting (Sérsic indices) nonparametric (concentration, asymmetry, smoothness (CAS) values). these, measure relative fraction disk, spheroidal, peculiar < 8. discover surprising result that 1.5 disk dominate overall morphologies, factor ?10 higher than by Hubble these redshifts. Our estimates align closely their locations CAS parameter space Sérsic indices.
